Canvas Administrator Guide - LTI 1.3
Below are the administrator steps to configure a product in Canvas LTI 1.3.
The URL should be replaced with assets.humanesources.com/ltiConfigurations/1.3/hes_canvas_ltia_staging.json if installing and testing in a Sandbox first.
- Log into Canvas using an administrator user.
- Go to Admin | Account
Click on Developer Keys and click +Developer Key
Click +LTI Key
Enter the information below:
Name: Human eSources LTI 1.3
- Click Save at the bottom right
- You should be back on the Developer Keys page and the new Key should be at the top of the list
Click the toggle button under state to enable the developer key.
Copy and save the Client ID shown in the Details column above the Show Key button.
Tool registration is only necessary for the first HeS product and does not need to be performed for any additional products added.
If possible, tool deployment should be done at the Canvas account level. This will make the deployment available for every course in the account. If this is not possible due to security restrictions, we are able to deploy per course. However, this requires faculty to provide a new deployment ID to the CustomerCare team for each new course before the product can be used.
Deploy per Canvas Account (preferred)
- In Canvas, go to Admin | Account
- Click Settings in the left menu
- Click the Apps tab
- Click the View App Configurations button
- Click +App to add a new deployment
- For Configuration Type, select By Client ID and enter the Client ID of the developer key created above.
- Click Submit.
- You should see an Add App confirmation pop up. Click Install. If you see the prompt that the tool has already been installed, choose "Yes, Install Tool"
- In the Apps list, click the gear icon beside your new app and click Deployment ID.
- Copy and save the displayed deployment ID.
Deploy per course
- Instead of going to the Account settings, open Settings in the course you wish to deploy to.
- Follow the steps above from 3 onwards.
- This process will need to be followed each time you deploy the tool to a new course, including providing your new deployment ID to the CustomerCare Team. Please note that students and faculty will not be able to access the material until the deployment ID has been provided to CustomerCare.
Provide your registration and deployment details to the HeS team
- Once you have registered the tool and created your deployment, our team will need to associate your registration with your account in our system. Please provide the registration and deployment details to the Customer Care team at customercare@humanesources.com.
Add the App to a Course
Create a new Canvas course or select an existing course.
In the course, open the Modules page and click on +Module
Click the kebab button that is to the right of the +Module button Click on the Human eSources Product Selection item.
You should see a product selection page where you can select the product to be added to the course.
Choose a product from the drop-down and click Submit. If the selected product is an assessment, it will be imported directly. If the selected product is a publication, then you will see the grading configuration screen. Choose your grading method and click Submit Configuration Choices.
After the import is successful, you should see a new Module added and the assessment or all chapters listed under that module.
Click on one of the assignments to ensure the instructor UI displays properly.
