Student Guide to Using Online Textbooks in Canvas

Student Guide to Using Online Textbooks in Canvas

If you are a student in a course that uses one of our online textbooks in Canvas, here's how to access the online textbook. The instructions are the same for any of our online textbooks.

Step-by-step guide for students

This step by guide provides students with instructions to access our online textbooks in Canvas. You can pay the fee either with a code bought at the bookstore, or by credit card or PayPal (your institution may determine the options available).

  • Access your course in Canvas.
  • Depending upon your course setup, you'll find links to the online textbook through Modules or Assignments. Select Modules (or Assignments if Modules does not show in your course) and then click on the link for the first chapter of the textbook.

  • When the logo appears, click on it and you’ll be prompted to enter an access key.

  • Select either “Enter Access Key” or select your method of payment (credit card or Paypal). If you’ve purchased an access key from the bookstore or your instructor provided you with a key, click Enter Access Key.

After your access key is entered or payment is completed, you’ll see the introduction page. When you click on a chapter for the first time through Modules or Assignments, that chapter is unlocked so that work can be completed.

To see your online textbook contents and results page, click on the logo while in any chapter.

Your chapter has not been submitted for grading until you click Continue on the last page of the chapter and then select OK indicating that the chapter is complete and you wish to submit your work.

The Chapters column contains the live links to each chapter where you follow page by page and complete any activities, quizzes, and journal entries.  Be sure to click Continue at the bottom of every page!

The Chapter Results column is where you can view your submitted quizzes and journals, along with grade information.

The Assessments column has links to your completed assessment reports.

Note:  You have the ability to stop working within a chapter and go back to review or change entries (except quizzes).  However, once you submit a chapter, it is locked and you can only view it again.
